Frequently Asked Questions
Everything we get asked across temp power, generators, and jobsite internet — grouped by service so you can jump to what you need.
Walls
How long does it take to build a wall in Long Beach?
Most residential walls are 1–3 weeks from breaking ground to cleanup. Engineering and permit can add 2–4 weeks before that.
Do I need a permit?
Walls over three feet typically need a permit and engineered drawings in Long Beach. We handle the permit and engineering coordination.
What's the difference between block, brick, and stone?
CMU block is the structural workhorse, often veneered with brick or stone. Brick is timeless and good value. Cut stone is premium and unique. We’ll show you samples in your light.
Will the wall last?
Yes — properly engineered and drained masonry walls last 50+ years. The two failure modes are bad drainage and undersized footing, both of which we engineer around.
Are you licensed?
Yes — we’re a licensed California masonry contractor, fully insured and bonded. License number and insurance certificate on request.
Stonework
Real stone or cultured stone?
Both have a place. Real stone is timeless, more expensive, and has weight (sometimes needs structural review). Cultured stone is lighter, cheaper, and very convincing when done right. We’ll talk through the right call for your project.
Will the stone fall off?
Not when it’s installed right. We use proper lath, scratch coat, weather barrier, and flashing. The two failure modes are bad water management and skipping the scratch coat — we don’t cut either corner.
How long does a stone fireplace take?
Most full-height stone fireplaces are 2–4 weeks including substrate prep and cleanup.
Can you match stone to the existing house?
Usually yes — we source from multiple stone yards and bring samples to compare in your light before ordering.
Do I need a permit for stone veneer?
Cosmetic veneer over an existing structure usually does not. Structural stonework (load-bearing walls, chimneys) does. We handle permits when needed.
Patios
How long does a patio take?
Small patios are 3–7 days. Full backyard builds with grading, drainage, and large patios are 2–4 weeks.
Pavers or stamped concrete?
Pavers are more forgiving — they flex with the ground, can be lifted and reset, and don’t crack. Stamped concrete is one continuous look, less expensive per square foot, but cracks over time. We’ll talk through the right pick for your yard.
Will the patio drain?
Yes — proper grading slopes water away from the house. On problem yards we install French drains, channel drains, or dry wells as part of the build.
Can you build over the old slab?
Sometimes — if the slab is sound and at the right elevation, pavers can lay over it. Cracked or sunken slabs need tear-out.
Do I need a permit?
Most flat-grade patios under a certain area do not. Patios with structures (covers, kitchens, retaining elements) often do. We handle permits when required.
Concrete
How long does a concrete driveway take?
Tear-out and re-pour of a standard driveway is 5–10 days including cure time before you can drive on it.
When can I walk or drive on new concrete?
Walk: 24–48 hours. Drive: 7 days for cars, 14+ days for heavy vehicles. We cure properly so it gets full strength.
Will the concrete crack?
All concrete develops hairline shrinkage cracks; that’s normal. Structural cracking comes from bad sub-base, missing rebar, or no control joints — we don’t cut those corners.
Can you do stamped or colored concrete?
Yes — slate, ashlar, cobblestone, wood-plank, and custom stamp patterns. Integral color or stain finishes. Bring photos and we’ll match the look.
Do I need a permit?
Replacing a driveway or slab in-kind usually does not. New driveways, slope changes, or work in the public right-of-way do. We handle permits when required.
