Stucco is the default exterior finish across Southern California, which means most of what we get called for is stucco repair rather than a new application. Cracks are the usual complaint, and the important distinction is between hairline cracking, which is cosmetic and expected, and anything wider than a sixteenth of an inch, which is a path for water into the wall. Once moisture is behind the finish the problem stops being the stucco and becomes the sheathing, the paper and the framing underneath, and at that point patching the surface just hides it. We do crack repair and patching, colour and texture matching, full stucco remediation where the substrate is compromised, and new applications on garden walls, block walls and additions. Traditional three-coat cement stucco and synthetic acrylic systems both get used here and behave very differently, so knowing which one you have matters before anyone starts. Reasons To Repair Stucco
Stucco tolerates a lot and then fails quickly. Signs it is time:
Cracks wider than a sixteenth of an inch
Hairline crazing is cosmetic. Anything you can get a fingernail into is letting water through to the paper behind, and the damage from that point is cumulative and invisible until it is expensive.
Staining, blistering or soft spots
Dark streaks below windows, blistered paint or an area that sounds hollow when tapped all indicate moisture behind the finish. That is a remediation conversation rather than a patching one, because the paper and lath will have gone.
A garden or block wall that needs facing
Stucco over a CMU block wall is the standard way to turn a grey utility wall into a finished feature. It takes colour well, it pairs with a brick or cast cap, and it costs far less than facing the same wall in stone.
Damage from an impact or a removal
A car into a wall, a satellite dish taken off, a window replaced or a door filled in all leave patches that need lath, paper and three coats to blend rather than a bag of patch compound.
The colour has gone chalky or uneven
Older colour-coat finishes fade unevenly, especially on south and west elevations. A fog coat can refresh a sound wall at a fraction of the cost of a full re-stucco, and it is worth trying before anyone recommends replacement.
You are selling

How We Work
Site walk, samples, engineering and permit, then build. One crew chief from excavation to cleanup.
1. Inspect and diagnose
We look at the whole elevation and the details around it: window and door flashing, the roof junction, the weep screed at the base and the grade against the wall. Where we suspect moisture behind the finish we probe or open a small area rather than guess.
2. Cut out and rebuild the substrate
Failed stucco is cut back to sound material. Where the paper and lath are compromised, they come off and go back new with proper laps and flashing. On remediation this stage is most of the job and all of the value.
3. Scratch, brown, finish and colour
Three-coat work goes on as scratch, brown and finish with proper cure time between coats. Texture is matched by hand and feathered into the existing wall, then colour coat or paint goes on once it has cured. We leave a test patch first.

Facing CMU block in stucco to match the house, usually finished with a cast concrete or brick cap. The most cost-effective way to make a block wall look intentional rather than industrial.

Dash, lace, sand, smooth and Santa Barbara finishes matched by hand. Colour coat or fog coat to refresh a faded elevation without the cost of re-stuccoing a sound wall.

What Affects the Cost of Stucco
Stucco repair is priced by area and access; remediation runs roughly $8 to $12 per square foot. What sets it:
- Repair against remediation. Patching a crack in a sound wall is inexpensive. Stripping back to the sheathing, replacing paper and lath and rebuilding three coats is a different order of work.
- Extent of moisture damage. How far the wet area actually spreads is often only established once a small section is opened up, so we scope that honestly rather than guessing high.
- Texture difficulty. Some finishes blend easily. A heavy lace or an unusual dash on an old wall may need a larger area feathered out to disappear properly.
- Access and height. Ground floor is straightforward. Upper elevations and parapets need scaffolding or a lift.
- System type. Traditional three-coat cement work and synthetic acrylic systems have different material costs and different cure schedules.
- Colour and finish. A fog coat over a sound wall is cheap. A full colour coat across a whole elevation is not.

How long does stucco last?
Traditional stucco lasts 50 to 80 years with proper maintenance. Synthetic EIFS stucco lasts 20 to 30 years. Regular inspection and prompt stucco repair of cracks prevents moisture intrusion, which is what actually ends the life of a wall.

Common causes include foundation settling, improper mixing during installation, moisture damage, and thermal expansion. Hairline cracks are cosmetic, but cracks wider than 1/16 inch need professional stucco repair to prevent water damage.
